In a major change to the policy of issuing new GST registrations, the Centre government has made it mandatory for applicants to undergo biometric based Adhaar authentication. An order in this regard was issued by Ministry of Finance recently.

Elaborating further about this major change, renowned GST expert Advocate NK Thamman said, “The taxpayer applying for new registration who has opted for authentication of Aadhar number while filing application and is identified by common portal on the basis of data analysis and risk parameters, has to undergo biometric-based aadhar authentication. The taxpayer has to go to one of the facilitation centres notified by the Commissioner. At the centre, biometrics and photographs of the applicant will be taken. Further, the verification of original documents will be conducted at centre”

Thamman also added, “Earlier this was started on pilot basis in some states. Now, it has been implemented PAN India basis as per the recommendations of 53rd GST Council Meeting. This has been started to avoid misuse of credentials of innocent person and to stop fake registrations. There is two ways to take registration. One is aadhar authentication and other is physical verification by department. If a person opts for first and the system identifies him risky, then this procedure is required to be followed”
